Did you know....
- The most expensive Valentine card ever sent was by an Indian Prince to a woman in London in 1891. It was set in carved invory surounded by diamonds and cost 250,000 pounds.
- A farmer wrote 'I love you' across a field to his wife in manure.
- A girl rode 3 miles on horse-back wearing only black panties and 2 red heart-shaped stickers to deliver her Valentine's Day message to her husband at the factory where he worked.
(i have to wonder.. 2 red heart shaped stickers???)
- One lover got up at 4 am to paste more than 100 hearts on the pavement between the house of his girl friend and her school which was half a mile away.
- The first valentine card was suppsed to be sent by the Duke of Orleans to his wife when he was imprisoned in the Tower of London in 1415.
- A London couple had collected 450 Valentine day cards for 15 years. The prized collection is the 'black' Valentine cards which usually contain sarcatice rhyme. These cards are rare, because recipients first throw the card away.
- Eighteent century cards were engraved, hand-painted, laced, tinselled, decorated with moss, Flowers, Shells, etc.
- A bee-hive card of 1877 was once estimated to cost 80 to 100 pounds. It carries a cord which when pulled lifts the bee-hive and reveals two mice in a romantic mood.
